Sin duda que estos meses de pandemia han sido difíciles, desafiantes, agotadores para todos.Pero en medio de la incertidumbre, del cansancio surgen grandes ideas que nos sacan del hastío y nos devuelven a la esperanza y nos animan a más… Es que es justamente esto lo que ocurrió en nuestro colegio con un grupo de estudiantes de IIIº C, y 4to medio B y C y el profesor de Filosofía Alejandro Pérez y el profesor de inglés David Chamorro, quienes quisieron aprovechar las pantallas, las plataformas que ellos manejan y traspasar las fronteras para encontrarse con jóvenes del colegio Ateneo de Manila, colegio jesuita en Filipinas. Sí, tal como lees… Manila, Filipinas. 18 mil kilómetros de distancia y 12 usos horarios adelante del nuestro.

Without any doubt these pandemic times have been hard, challenging, tiring for all of us. Amid this uncertanty, and tiredness great ideas arise which leave us away from the boredom and carry us back to hope and encourage us for more. This is what has happened in our school with a group of students of 11th grade C and 12th graders B and C, besides the Philosophy teacher Alejandro Perez and the English teacher David Chamorro, the ones who wanted to take advantage of screens, online platforms managed by teachers and students and to be able to go beyond our frontiers to meet young students from Ateneo de Manila in the Philippines . Indeed, just as you are reading now…. Manila in The Phillipines.18 thousand kilometres away and 12 time zones ahead ours.

¿Pero cómo se da esto? Bueno, se trata de un intercambio de clases virtuales entre instituciones Ignacianas, por una semana, con el fin de establecer una cooperación mutua y generar vínculos formales para que en un futuro se puedan desarrollar proyectos de intercambios físicos de alumnos y profesores. El profesor David Chamorro, encargado de relaciones internacionales del San Ignacio A.O. explica; “La idea surge del interés que como Colegio tenemos de construir un sentimiento de ciudadanía global en nuestros alumnos, donde los límites no existen. Entonces, vimos que utilizando la tecnología que hemos aprendido a usar en este tiempo de pandemia podíamos establecer conexiones virtuales con otros colegios jesuitas y así, más adelante, tener la posibilidad de vivir experiencias de intercambios físicos con otras instituciones”.

How did this start? Well. It is about an online class exchange between Ingatian institutions, for just one week, with the main goal of setting up mutual undertanding and cooperation and generate projects of live exchanges of students and teachers. Teacher David Chamorro, head of international affairs Saint Ignatius A.O. explains; “The idea rises from the interest we have to build a global citizenship feeling among our students where limits no longer exist. Hence, we have foreseen that using technology we could stablish virtual conexions with other Jesuit schools and thus, further in the future, having the possibility to live real and traditional exchanges as they were intended before the pandemic.

Y de esta forma este proyecto se hizo realidad… El profesor David Chamorro se contactó con el Colegio Ateneo de Manila, ellos se entusiasmaron y finalmente esta semana 17 estudiantes del colegio Ateneo, entre 14 y 17 años, participaron voluntariamente y virtualmente de las clases de inglés y de filosofía de nuestro Colegio San Ignacio y compartieron con nuestros estudiantes.

And this is the way this project started and came to reality… Teacher David Chamorro contacted Ateneo de Manila, they immediatly engaged in the project and finally this week 17 Filipino students from the Ateneo, aged 14 to 17, online and voluntarily participated in the English and Philosophy classes in San Ingacio A.O. Santiago de Chile.

“La clase estuvo genial. Comenzó con todos los estudiantes presentándose, y conversamos acerca de lo que ellos conocían de Chile (Isla de Pascua, los pingüinos y la película de los 33 mineros) y nosotros de Filipinas (Paquiao, que comen mucho cerdo). Luego hablamos de la diferencia de horario (12 horas) y de lo contento que estaban y estábamos. Iniciamos la clase, que hice mitad en español, mitad en inglés y algunas preguntas las contestaron ellos, algunas nosotros. Al final nos sacamos una foto. ‘La verdad que ha sido una experiencia que ojalá sea el trampolín para otras”, comenta el profesor de filosofía Alejandro Pérez quien no dudo en aceptar la invitación del profesor Chamorro y se sumó a esta iniciativa.

“The class was great. It all started with students introducing themselves. We talked about what they knew about Chile (Easter Island, penguins and the 33 miners’ movie) and we talked about the Philippines (Paquiao, and their love for pork meat). The we talked abou time difference (12 hours) and about the joy we had. We started classes in bilingual mode and we actively participated answering questions. In the end we took a picture. “The truth is that this experience I hope would be the beginnig for other ones” commented Philosophy teacher Alejandro Perez who bravely accepted the invitation sent by David Chamorro, and he joined in this endeavour.

“ Ha sido muy bonito ver como los estudiantes del colegio Ateneo de Manila y su profesor se han sacrificado, desde las 12.45 a las 1.25 de la madrugada, para sumarse a nuestras clases, sobretodo si pensamos que ellos además están de vacaciones. Este es el primer intercambio virtual , espero de muchos más.

Desde ya, agradezco el apoyo incondicional de nuestros alumnos, del profesor Alejandro Pérez, Joel Falgui (Ateneo English teacher), del Director de Ciclo, David Moya, y de la Dirección del Colegio”. Y ahora vamos por más.

“It’s been great to see how The Ateneo de Manila students and teacher have sacrificed, from 12.45 to 1.25 am to attend to our class sessions, and above all knowing they had started vacations 3 weeks ago.

It’s been the first virtual exchange experience, I hope we could have many more.
